Step-by-Step Guide
-
Create a new design and set your canvas size Open Canva and click Create a design. Choose a preset size (e.g. Instagram Post 1080×1080 px) or enter a custom width and height. The canvas size determines the final export resolution.
-
Upload your photo or choose one from Canva To use your own image, click Uploads in the left panel and drag your file in. Alternatively, go to the Photos section to search Canva's free and premium photo library and click any photo to add it to the canvas.
-
Find the circle frame in Elements Click Elements in the left panel, then type Frames in the search bar and press Enter. A grid of frame shapes will appear — look for the circle (round) frame and click it to add it to your canvas.
-
Drag and drop your photo into the frame From the Uploads or Photos panel, click and hold your image, then drag it directly on top of the circle frame. When the frame highlights, release the mouse — Canva will snap the photo inside the circle automatically.
-
Double-click the frame to adjust the photo Double-click inside the circle to enter edit mode. You can now drag the photo to reposition it, and use the zoom slider or scroll wheel to resize it within the circle. Get the crop exactly how you want it.
-
Click "Done" to confirm Click the blue Done button (top right of the image controls) to lock in your crop position.
-
Download your circular photo Go to File → Download (or click the Share button → Download). Choose your format:
- PNG with transparent background — in Canva Pro, tick Transparent background before downloading. This gives you a circle with no white square behind it, perfect for placing on any coloured background.
- Standard PNG / JPG — downloads the circle on a white or coloured canvas background.

Use a square canvas for profile pictures
If your goal is a profile picture for Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, or Facebook, start with a 1080×1080 px canvas. Most platforms crop profile pictures into a circle automatically, but having the image already circular means no surprises in how it's cropped.
Try other frame shapes
The Frames section in Canva has dozens of shapes beyond the circle — hearts, stars, hexagons, speech bubbles, and more. The same drag-and-drop technique works for all of them.
Use a high-resolution photo
Start with the largest version of your photo to avoid pixelation when zooming in inside the frame. Canva works best with images at least 1000 px wide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a circular photo in Canva for free?
Yes. The circle frame feature is available on all Canva plans including the free tier. The only paid-only feature is downloading with a transparent background (Canva Pro), but you can work around that with our free background remover.
My photo won't snap into the frame — what's wrong?
Make sure you are dragging the photo from the left-side panel (Uploads or Photos), not from the canvas. If you've already placed the photo on the canvas, try dragging it directly from the panel again or use copy-paste into the frame.
How do I resize the circle frame itself?
Click the circle frame once to select it (not the photo inside), then drag the corner handles to resize. Hold Shift while dragging to keep it perfectly round.
Can I add a border or shadow to the circle?
Yes — with the frame selected, use the top toolbar to add a border colour or try Effects → Shadow. You can also layer a matching circle shape behind the frame for a coloured ring effect.
